VML Mute 1.0

Hopper on 06/11/2013

Update: this plugin and goran's Visual Mode Lua Physics are no longer necessary with Visual Mode 3.0. Use that instead!

VML Mute replaces the default monster activation and teleport sounds with silence. You will see the teleport effects, but hear only the ambient noises of the level.

This is a small, symmetrical netmap supporting emfh, koth, ktmwtb and survival. It has been merged with Hopper's Aleph One Previous AI to prevent monsters from freezing up, so the plugin won't be necessary for this map. It's recommended for two-player sized netgames, but three might work aswell.

Screenshot titled "Strange Aeons"

An original fan soundtrack for Marathon Infinity, composed by Talashar. Featuring themes from Marathon, Halo, and M2SE. This won't just be a mashup of themes you know though, levels and character have been given their own themes to provide a new dimension to the game. Experience Infinity in a whole new way. Based on Treellama's M2SE plugin.

Preview my music here: https://talashar.bandcamp.com/album/strange-aeons

NOTE MUSIC DOES NOT LOOP ENDLESSLY. This is intended. Many levels have added silence to allow the ambience some time on the stage. This silence is not a bug. Each level has been assigned specific tracks to emphasize narrative beats, emotional highlights, atmosphere, and overall vibe. If you would like looping versions of the songs, you can get them for free via the bandcamp link (click Buy Album then enter $0).

Recommended volume levels are 100% Master, 70% Music.

If you run into any issues with this plugin, I can be found in the Marathon Discord as @throkgaar.

Enjoy.

Notes for version High Quality Update:

Slight tweaks to timing and higher quality .ogg files with Metadata.

In the original Marathon 1 game for Macintosh, there is a white screen flash fader that happens when you teleport in. I created a .lua script to emulate this behavior. Installation instructions included.

Notes for version 1.0:

This is an initial version that works perfectly fine most of the time. However, if you manage to shoot yourself across a map at a high rate of speed (i.e. from a rocket), that may falsely trip the teleport detector.

this is a collection of various fragments of ideas I've had. at least, the ones that were workable enough to even bother trying out, and interesting enough to bother sharing. a couple of these have been posted on the pfhorums in various threads at one time or another. none of these are full maps, and some aren't even finished. take them for what they are.

note: these have all been tested in aleph 1.0b4. some (most?) of them probably work in older versions, but I haven't bothered to go back and check.

this package contains:

  • cage
  • caustics
  • cheatastic
  • forcefield
  • hamster
  • magic carpet
  • ribs
  • starwars
  • the old factory
  • tightrope

Screenshot titled "See You Starside album cover"

First off, I want to make something abundantly clear: This is not a conventional remix album – I categorise it as an arrangement album. Anyone expecting these songs to preserve the originals’ mood and atmosphere is in for a severe disappointment, though I do have a much older set of remixes¹ that might be more to your taste. I also strongly recommend against using this album for your first playthrough; it’ll substantially alter the game’s atmosphere, which is one of its most memorable qualities. It would (hopefully) still be enjoyable, but it wouldn’t really be Marathon.

That said, these intricate, dense, yet dynamic mixes are brimming with retro synths, arpeggiation, musical cross-references, reverb, and entirely new instrument parts and melodies: where the OST runs for forty minutes, these run for seventy-eight. They’re Marathon’s OST by way of ’70s progressive rock songwriting and arrangement, ’80s pop production, and ’90s Japanese games’ atmosphere, with secondary influences from genres as disparate as jazz, blues, disco, ambient, post-rock, classical, electronic music, Krautrock, and metal.

I’ve included both a lossless FLAC version of this album and an Ogg Vorbis version suitable for in-game use. The Vorbis versions are mostly based on the FLAC files. The sole exception is “Flowers in Heaven”, which loops infinitely² in-game. Thus, the FLAC version in the album simply fades out after completing a loop.

The album also comes with a 16-page PDF featuring additional album artwork and my commentary on each individual song and the album as a whole.

My complete discography, including some works in progress, is available here: https://aaronfreed.github.io/discography.html

I also have these on YouTube, although I strongly encourage use of an adblocker, since YouTube has decided to take the liberty of running ads that I do not want on my videos and do not make a single cent from. There’s no copyright claim on the video, so this is just Google violating its erstwhile mantra of “don’t be evil”. https://youtu.be/bRiDh3PziWU

Plus, I’ve posted videos of “Cool Fusion” and “Bob-B-Q” showing how, respectively, “Flowers in Heaven” and “What About Bob?” play in-game.

“Cool Fusion”: https://youtu.be/QfF01WLolgM

“Bob-B-Q”: https://youtu.be/mj_Jy5HMxRc

Now you can hear the Original Marathon Soundtrack in the modern MIDI Instruments for Quicktime! Me sad though, no plugin, no MML script, just replace your Tracks folder with the new one... :'-(

Notes for version Bonus Edition:

It may not be a plugin, and it may not replace on its own, but it has some cool extra stuff, things for newcomers and things for Born on Boards!

There have been a few renditions of a FloatingX for M1A1, but non of them looked like they belonged in the actual game of Marathon.

This version matches the interface of the real game, and has the same floaty goodness of FloatingX.

The screenshots are actually from Legend, and the version i captured is slightly out of date, so there may be some very very minor differences.

Finally, The Health and Oxygen bars are misaligned by one pixel... Because of this small margin, I cannot correct it. And yes, I have tried.

This is a sounds remaster for Marathon 2 and Infinity. It converts all sounds to 44.1 KHz 16-bit stereo with noise suppression, widens them, equalizes them, and adds reverb and echo at appropriate times.

Notes for version 0.1:

There are a few sounds that need to be adjusted: -S'pht Platform running sound is too loud and sounds like a freight train humping a drum store. -Some looping sounds need proper intro/end termination to remove the transition "popping". This has been fixed already for "Alien Noise 1" and sounds lovely on Acme Station.

I felt like google translating all the Bob and VacBob lines for fun and comedy, so i did it.

This has a sound file that has all of the Bobs and VacBobs lines google translated.

This was made for Infinity, but it does work in 2 as well.

note - only works in 16 bit sound mode (because i was to lazy to replace the 8 bit ones)

Soron - Bobs

Narrow Mountain Path is a weaponless platforming map combining tricks that let the player climb stairs higher than .33 WU and regular fast precision platforming. If a player gains a bit of height off the ground they can put their feet within .33 WU of a higher ledge and climb it, again giving them extra height they can use to climb subsequent steps. Using air control you can also steer off and onto a ledge so that you gain a height boost as if you were climbing a step which makes longer than normal horizontal jumps possible.

Despite the special trick emphasis I've tried to make this a flowy fun map to play through without falling or speedrun. Included in this download is a speedrun film and a film showing some more beginner friendly routes. A second version of the map with 3x health and an AR can be reached with level skip for more speedrun fun.

Straferunning is required to beat this map. To strafe run, press your forward + left or right strafe key to move faster at a slight diagonal.

If it exists, the space station is located in the KBC void near the edge of the observable universe, conducting experiments on a theoretically proposed anomaly predicted to be in this region of space. With the prior knowledge that return of even data from this mission was not possible due to the vast distance, our ancestors set out on a journey across the stars to target this predicted phenomenon. Any remains of the vessel are assumed to be drifting in a lifeless unhabitable condition. Distant whispers of long forgotten reality bending experiments in extradimensional space are all that remains of the original documentation about the expedition which left our local region of space approximately 2.2 Ma. You are to collect any and all research data and artefacts, evacuate any unlikely survivors and secure the station for detonation. Good luck.

Notes for version 0.08:

Added second level to space station.
