This is a little weekend project that ended up taking a few more days than planned, please be aware that some textures still need some work but in general im happy with the current quality of most textures.

NOW UPDATED FOR ULTRAWIDE AND 16:10!

Experience the authentic 1994 jank of Marathon 1's classic HUD as if it were made for your monitor!

This plugin takes the classic HUD and extends it to fill modern 16:9, 16:10, and Ultrawide displays.

The same plugin covers widescreen monitors whether it is 16:9, 16:10, or 21:9. It automatically adapts to your chosen resolution.

With the extra space, additional inventory pages are displayed. In Solo games, weapons and ammo are displayed. In Netgames, the scoreboard is always displayed.

Based on the Default M1 HUD plugin included with Aleph One's M1 release.

For a more minimal but still classic style HUD, check out my Widescreen Marathon 2 HUD plugin, which includes a specially modified variant for Marathon 1.

Wide Marathon 2 & Marathon Infinity HUD here.

Notes for version 2.611:

v2.611 - just a re-zip since the plugin wasn't in a folder, sorry

v2.610 - Added 16:10 version for Steam Deck and Mac players. Updated to newer Default M1 HUD script.

v2.19 - Added 21:9 Ultrawide support

Enjoy an arena netmap for Marathon 1! It is tested in live netgames with the new Steam build, and it works. The design is a little rough around the edges, but you get a lot more ammo, guns, and space to play in than the classic netmaps.

This map was created in Pfhorte and submitted to the Map of the Month back in the day. It was lost for a number of years, and I was super happy to find it on the Marathon Archives bungie.org site.

Don't stand still on the flamethrower platform! :)

Notes for version 1.0:

The original from May 2000.

It could use some tweaks with flow, and texturing, a bouncy wall or two, but it's still pretty fun. It would be cool to find a way to edit this and polish it up.

Basic M1 HUD 1.2

treellama on 05/01/2024

Screenshot titled ""

This is a basic fullscreen HUD for the original Classic Marathon. It also works with TROJAN. It is very minimalist, see the screenshots for details.

Software mode works but the square motion sensor will not be clipped out.

All three HUD sizes are supported, but the plugin will not cause the HUD to cover too much of weapons. Basically, Double doesn't work until 2k, and Largest isn't really useful until 4K.

To install, copy this into the Plugins directory in your Classic Marathon install.

Notes for version 1.2:

Changes:

  • Better normal/double/largest support

Eupfhoria - Marathon Soundtrack Remake

Eupfhoria is a fully re-instrumented and re-scored soundtrack mod for the first Marathon. This replacement tries to remaster the original soundtrack while retaining the original feel. It IS the tracks you know and love, as it's based off the original MIDI files. Most tracks should fuller and more atmospheric, hopefully a bit like Marathon's younger brother, Halo.

To see if this is for you without downloading, you can stream it all here: Eupfhoria - Full Album Stream

Installation is simple, just replace your Music folder found in the Marathon directory. Backup your original folder if you want to go back to the originals.

NOTE: Don't use this for your first playthrough. Really. This is for people who've played through it before and want a new experience. Updating those pesky textures is one thing, but save this for your second playthrough.

Notes for version 1.1:

Updated files to work with all versions of AlephOne. Simply replace the files in your Music folder of Marathon 1 with the files in this link.

Screenshot titled "See You Starside album cover"

First off, I want to make something abundantly clear: This is not a conventional remix album – I categorise it as an arrangement album. Anyone expecting these songs to preserve the originals’ mood and atmosphere is in for a severe disappointment, though I do have a much older set of remixes¹ that might be more to your taste. I also strongly recommend against using this album for your first playthrough; it’ll substantially alter the game’s atmosphere, which is one of its most memorable qualities. It would (hopefully) still be enjoyable, but it wouldn’t really be Marathon.

That said, these intricate, dense, yet dynamic mixes are brimming with retro synths, arpeggiation, musical cross-references, reverb, and entirely new instrument parts and melodies: where the OST runs for forty minutes, these run for seventy-eight. They’re Marathon’s OST by way of ’70s progressive rock songwriting and arrangement, ’80s pop production, and ’90s Japanese games’ atmosphere, with secondary influences from genres as disparate as jazz, blues, disco, ambient, post-rock, classical, electronic music, Krautrock, and metal.

I’ve included both a lossless FLAC version of this album and an Ogg Vorbis version suitable for in-game use. The Vorbis versions are mostly based on the FLAC files. The sole exception is “Flowers in Heaven”, which loops infinitely² in-game. Thus, the FLAC version in the album simply fades out after completing a loop.

The album also comes with a 16-page PDF featuring additional album artwork and my commentary on each individual song and the album as a whole.

My complete discography, including some works in progress, is available here: https://aaronfreed.github.io/discography.html

I also have these on YouTube, although I strongly encourage use of an adblocker, since YouTube has decided to take the liberty of running ads that I do not want on my videos and do not make a single cent from. There’s no copyright claim on the video, so this is just Google violating its erstwhile mantra of “don’t be evil”. https://youtu.be/bRiDh3PziWU

Plus, I’ve posted videos of “Cool Fusion” and “Bob-B-Q” showing how, respectively, “Flowers in Heaven” and “What About Bob?” play in-game.

ampeg_release may need to be adjusted on some of the instruments to properly recreate.

2.1 accented hi-hat sounds weird but that may just be how QuickTime processes it in a mix.

Random spikes in MIDI playback may be caused by duplicate notes.

Marathon OST 2021 1.4

ckt1138 on 03/14/2021

Screenshot titled ""

The entire Marathon OST meticulously restored with new instruments and better production value.

Unlike most M1 music replacers, this one does NOT try to heavily alter the original composition nor is it simply a sound font swap. I remixed everything inside of FL Studio 20 with high quality VST instruments and (occasionally) real hardware synths and sounds. My goal was to create a faithful reinterpretation of the OST with mostly appropriate sounds (nothing more modern than 1990's electronic instruments, etc) but with a better overall balance and less cheap sound. I'm extremely proud of the outcome, and I think fans of the original game and its score will really appreciate it too!

This download contains a FLAC and OGG version, to replace the in game music, simply drop the OGG files into the "Music" folder in your Marathon directory.

If Aleph One is ever updated to allow gapless looping of music, I will create a loopable mix.

(if you enjoyed this music, check out fragileforms.bandcamp.com , where I post my original music as MetaMorphosys)

Marathon TROJAN 1.0

Shappie on 08/31/2020

Screenshot titled ""

Here it is, at last: Marathon TROJAN. Now compatible with Aleph One (1.3 or newer), this uses the native M1 files to deliver the original, unaltered experience we know from the 90's.

M1 compatible fullscreen HUD plugins will work with TROJAN if you don't want to use the included Classic HUD plugin.

Additional files include the Weapons Pump Patch, FAQ, Manual, Spoiler Guide, and read me's from older versions of TROJAN.

Special thank you to Hamish Sanderson for giving us permission to distribute this re-release of TROJAN. Enjoy!

My long-overdue remastered Marathon 1 sounds. They should be noticeably less noisy, crisper, and (in some cases) less distorted than the originals - even more so than my remastered Marathon Infinity sounds, since all of the original Marathon 1 sounds were 8-bit.

Includes a readme with a bunch of (hopefully) useful information, but you should be aware of a few caveats before downloading or using these:

  • These will only work with Aleph One, not the vanilla Marathon app.

  • These will only work with the classic Marathon files, not M1A1.

  • If, for some reason, you are still using an Aleph One version prior to 1.3: (a) you really should upgrade to the latest version; (b) if you don’t, you’ll need to quit and reopen Aleph One after selecting these in your preferences.

  • These are half as loud as the original sounds. You may wish to adjust your music volume.

Should you have any other issues, please let me know via one of the forms of contact included in the readme. Beyond that, enjoy!

Phoenix Falling 1.3

Shappie on 07/18/2020

Screenshot titled ""

Phoenix Falling is a large M1 scenario of 44 levels featuring a new story with new characters, weapons, creatures, sounds, shapes, and more. (48 with secret levels and one network level)

Please keep in mind - there are bugs in this release. Most of these are caused by running the game in the Aleph One engine, which did not yet exist when the scenario was created. This used to be run with the original M1 engine.

Some of the largest known bugs are related to shapes not rendering correctly with chairs, tracer rounds from the brass gun, the weapon display in the HUD interface, and most of the new creature animations.

Repackaged for Simplici7y with permission from the Phoenix Falling creators, Matt & Andrew Schenk.

Notes for version 1.3:

This version has a fixed Map file that should allow terminals to function in the vacuum levels.
